Strong Girls Nepal

What are the challenges?

Dalit girls In Nepal have to overcome great social and economic obstacles to complete school successfully. Caste and gender discrimination put Dalit girls at the lowest end of the social scale and parents traditionally attach little value to the education of girls. For those girls who are in school, inadequate equipment (toilets, furniture, material), poor teaching and negative experiences of girls in school cause many of them to drop-out early, usually becoming child brides instead.

What is the aim of the project?

The project seeks to give girls from marginalized and Dalit communities access to quality education, enabling them to complete primary school and transition to secondary education.

What are the main activities?

  • Training teachers and refurbishing school environments
  • Increasing confidence among adolescent girls with girl groups and specialised extra curricular activities
  • Vocational training and livelihood development for mothers
  • Sensitisation training for education authorities and wider communities
