£1,000 — Would train 500 community group leaders to run workshops in their villages to address gender-based violence and its solutions

£2,000 — Would allow 25 women to be trained as paralegals — “barefoot lawyers” — equipping them to support women survivors of violence in their communities acquire justice.

£5,000 — Would support 40 women to receive comprehensive vocational training, securing new skills in a sustainable, long-term independent livelihood.

£10,000 — Could deliver an entire community investment package for 150 women, including complete livelihood training, leadership and governance workshops as well as legal trainingsupport and resources for survivors

The Problem

Poverty doesn’t just deny women income—it denies them agency, the power to make decisions about their own lives.

Whether a girl goes to school or is married.

Whether a woman can earn a living or must depend on someone else.

Whether she speaks or is silenced.

In the communities we work with, girls marry at ten. Entire tribes are criminalised from birth, struggling to access basic provisions. Sexual violence is hidden and unspoken. Women living in extreme poverty have no safe way to earn independently, which traps the next generation in the same cycles.

Without an independent income, a mother cannot pay school fees, challenge child marriage, or protect her daughter. The problem isn’t ambition or ability—it’s the structures designed to restrict power.

Yet, in every community, women are already leading.

One survivor founded the Sukhaya Foundation, teaching women and children to identify and report sexual violence. Another, from a criminalised tribal community, built an organisation reaching 30 villages with education, mental health, land rights, and civic registration programs.

They didn’t wait for permission. They saw the problem from within and built the solution. What they needed was infrastructure, funding, and support.

That’s where we step in.

INVESTMENT, NOT AID

Karuna works differently. Through our partners, we invest in women leaders already solving problems on the ground.

Our partners provide funding, organisational development, training, and direct support for the women and girls these leaders serve. We help build structures strong enough to stand independently. Then we step back.

Our approach isn’t creating dependency—it’s creating lasting change. When women lead, communities thrive. When women earn, girls stay in school. Strengthening a leader strengthens her community.
