Underage marriage robs millions of girls in South Asia of their childhoods, education, and denies them the right to be decision-makers of their own future. Forced into early marriages, they face increased risks of violence, poverty and health complications during pregnancy. Education is their best defence, yet it remains out of reach for so many.
Karuna is partnering with local communities to keep girls in education and out of child marriage. We provide education materials, training programmes and travel support for them to arrive safely. Girls are supported to stay in school and complete their education at least until the age of 18. Mothers are given support, including vocational and financial training allowing them to earn an independent income, to decrease pressure on their children to earn. Father and brother groups are also formed, in order to help raise awareness of girl’s education.
96% of children in Karuna projects continue their education past the age of 14, almost double the national average.
