“The Problem”
Millions of South Asia’s poorest girls still cannot access education.
For families struggling to simply survive, education is a luxury. This poverty intersects with entrenched discrimination, valuing sons as future earners while viewing daughters as financial burdens to be married off quickly. Boys’ education is prioritised, while most girls are pulled out of school early and forced into illegal child marriages.
For many of these girls, this means a life of household servitude and, too often, domestic abuse and voiceless suffering. Their potential and ambitions are forgotten, pulling them further into poverty and perpetuating the cycle for the next generation.
Whether they once dreamt of being leaders, innovators, decision-makers or something entirely their own, those dreams can still be realised—but only with support. Together, we can and must break down these barriers that keep them out of school—because even if every girl has a different dream, every girl counts.
“The Solution”
To make sure that every girl is counted, we work where girls are most at risk.
This often includes working in some of the most isolated and hard-to-reach places in the world. By collaborating with incredible local partners, whose deep understanding of the community’s needs is second-to-none, we can ensure our resources are focused in the right places.
This means addressing both the daily barriers a girl can face, as well as the long-term, structural inequalities that perpetuate the issue for future generations.
Where girls can’t afford uniforms, textbooks or school fees, we provide them. When they live too far from schools or are isolated, we arrange transport.
At the same time, where historic discrimination keeps girls out of school, we work with parents, teachers and communities to change attitudes. When financial pressure is the primary obstacle, we build networks with our livelihood initiatives, creating relief for struggling families. And, when girls do face child marriage, we advocate for their rights, keeping them safe and in school as a priority.
Breaking down these barriers doesn’t just change one girl’s future. It transforms entire communities from the inside. For each girl who gains access to education, she paves the way for others. Every girl counts—not only for herself, but for all those who will follow her.
“What can I do?”
Our work is making a difference— thanks to your support so far 94% of girls in Karuna projects stay in school past the age of 16, more than double the national average in the areas in which we work.
And we want to go further. We aim to reach 12,267 girls across all our initiatives over the next year. Your support is what makes this and all Karuna’s work possible.
Your donation today could be the difference between a girl staying in school and avoiding child marriage. Please give today to help raise £59,000 towards this ambitious goal.
Please give below and, together, we can make sure that every girl counts. Thank you.
