Together, we can create a world where menstruation is no longer a source of shame or exclusion.

In many parts of South Asia, menstruation is still surrounded by stigma, superstition and the idea that they are inherently ‘impure’.

Women and girls are often banished to menstrual huts (chaugoths) or unsafe spaces, separate from their homes, during their periods. They face nearly a quarter of their life in these conditions. Experiencing isolation, health risks, and in extreme cases, even death. This practice, known as menstrual exile, perpetuates gender inequality and denies women their dignity.

Karuna is working alongside local partners embedded in the communities they serve and we can end menstrual exile, for good. Through education and community-led initiatives, we’re breaking taboos, sensitising men to the issues women and girls face, providing menstrual hygiene kits, and supporting women to reclaim their place in society.

End Menstrual Exile. Period.

The number of women forced to spend nights away from their homes during menstruation has reduced by 74%.

No woman should be exiled from her community due to menstruation. If you agree, sign here.
